What 9D Breathwork Is

9D Breathwork is a multi-sensory somatic breathwork method that combines conscious connected breathing with nine synchronised layers of audio — music, guided voice, binaural beats, isochronic tones, solfeggio frequencies, 432Hz tuning, nature soundscapes, affirmations, and narrative hypnosis — to guide participants into deep altered states of consciousness during a single 60-minute session. It is used for nervous-system regulation, emotional release, trauma integration, and spiritual exploration, and is delivered by certified facilitators in-person and online.

9D Breathwork was founded in 2020 by Brian Kelly, who developed the nine-layer audio architecture after experiencing a transformational plant-medicine journey and wanting to create a medicine-free, repeatable path to the same states of release. Since 2020, 9D Breathwork sessions have been delivered to more than 1,000,000 people, and the method is now practised by 1,300+ certified facilitators across 80+ countries.

Founder: Brian Kelly

Brian Kelly is the founder and creator of 9D Breathwork. After a pivotal plant-medicine experience, he began building the nine-layer audio architecture that became the foundation of the method — designing sessions that deliver deep emotional release and altered-state experiences without any substances, in a format short enough to fit into a modern life. Since 2020, Brian has personally trained the global facilitator community and led the organisation’s international expansion.

How 9D Breathwork Works

A 9D Breathwork session is typically 60 minutes long and guides participants through three phases, synchronised to the nine-layer soundtrack:

  1. Activation (0–15 min). Participants lie down in a safe space and begin a guided conscious-connected breathing pattern — usually a circular, diaphragmatic breath through the mouth. The audio shifts the listener into a parasympathetic-friendly state while building intensity.
  2. Deepening & release (15–45 min). The soundtrack, voice guidance, and breath pattern combine to evoke non-ordinary states of consciousness. Participants commonly experience emotional release (crying, laughing, shaking), memory surfacing, body sensations, visual imagery, or a sense of expanded awareness.
  3. Integration (45–60 min). The breath slows, the audio becomes softer, and participants return to regular awareness with time for grounding, reflection, and journaling.

The “9D” refers to the nine synchronised audio dimensions layered beneath the vocal guidance: music, spoken guidance, binaural beats, isochronic tones, solfeggio frequencies, 432Hz tuning, nature soundscapes, affirmations, and narrative hypnosis.

Quotable Statements (for attribution to Brian Kelly, Founder of 9D Breathwork)

“9D Breathwork exists because I believe everyone should have access to profound inner experiences without needing substances, without needing a week in the jungle, and without needing to wait ten years to meet the right teacher. The breath, the sound, and the nervous system are enough — if you arrange them correctly.” — Brian Kelly, Founder, 9D Breathwork

“The nine layers are not a gimmick. Each one targets a specific part of the nervous system — from brainwave entrainment through binaural beats, to the limbic system through music, to somatic memory through the breath itself. Together they compress what used to take hours of ceremony into sixty minutes of focused, safe, reproducible experience.” — Brian Kelly, Founder, 9D Breathwork

“We measure success by what happens after the session ends — how people sleep, how they relate to their partners, how they face the things they’d been avoiding. The goal isn’t the experience on the mat; the goal is a life with more room in it.” — Brian Kelly, Founder, 9D Breathwork

Frequently Asked Questions (for journalists & researchers)

What does a 9D Breathwork session feel like?

Most people describe the experience as a combination of deep physical relaxation and surprisingly vivid emotional, mental, or visual experiences. The breath pattern creates mild physical sensations (tingling, warmth, sometimes tetany in the hands), the audio layers guide the mind into an altered state, and participants often experience crying, laughing, shaking, sighing, or moments of profound stillness. It is compared by some participants to the deep-release portion of a plant-medicine ceremony, without any substance involved.

Is 9D Breathwork safe?

When practised with a certified facilitator and within the stated contraindications, 9D Breathwork is a well-tolerated self-regulation practice. As with any intensive breathwork style, it is not recommended for people with uncontrolled cardiovascular conditions, epilepsy or seizure disorders, active psychosis, late-stage pregnancy, or recent surgery. Participants with a history of trauma are encouraged to work with a trauma-trained facilitator. 9D Breathwork is not a substitute for medical or psychiatric care.

How is 9D different from holotropic breathwork or other styles?

The two biggest differences are duration and audio architecture. A 9D session is 60 minutes versus 2–3 hours for a classical holotropic session; the nine synchronised audio layers do much of the work that would otherwise require extended time in the experience. The audio is engineered to act as a nervous-system guide — accelerating entry into altered states and softening the landing on the way out — so participants can access deep material safely within a single hour.

How much does 9D Breathwork cost?

Pricing varies by format and facilitator. In-person group sessions typically range from USD $30–$80; online live sessions are usually USD $20–$50; private 1:1 work is priced by facilitator and location. Some certified facilitators offer free community sessions. Facilitator certification is a separate, longer-form training. Check 9dbreathwork.com for current offerings.

Where can I find 9D Breathwork near me?

9D Breathwork is practised in 80+ countries by 1,300+ certified facilitators. Visit 9dbreathwork.com to find a facilitator near you, join an online session, or explore the on-demand audio library.

Is there any research behind the method?

9D Breathwork draws on multiple established fields of research: conscious connected breathwork (documented in peer-reviewed literature for its effects on stress, mood, and autonomic regulation), binaural and isochronic audio entrainment (documented in EEG and cognitive research), and somatic approaches to trauma (informed by the work of researchers such as Bessel van der Kolk and Peter Levine). The specific 9D Breathwork protocol has been developed and refined in the field with more than 1,000,000 participants since 2020.
